At this year’s Ci4CC conference from 8/29-8/31 in Santa Barbara, CA, physicians and researchers from across the United States and abroad convened to discuss the importance of precision medicine in Radiation Oncology. The topic hits close to home for Atropos Health’s Medical Director, Dr Ye Yuan MD PhD, who is a Radiation Oncologist and informatics researcher himself.
While simultaneously practicing as a Radiation Oncologist and serving as the Co-Director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center Datahub at NYU Langone Health, Dr Yuan gained firsthand experience into the challenges of turning real-world data (RWD) into real-world evidence (RWE), as well as how invaluable RWE is to clinical decision making.
That’s why he joined Atropos Health, the developer of the first physician consultation service powered by publication-grade RWE.
“As the complexity of cancer care increases, there will be an increasing number of patients that fall in the evidence-gap. Atropos Health’s goal is to address this challenge by delivering publication-grade RWE to clinicians and researchers from oncology specific RWD assets,”
– Dr. Ye Yuan, in his keynote speech at Ci4CC: Real World Evidence at the LINAC.
One of the challenges of bringing RWE to the point of care is that it often needs to be at the pace of care to be most impactful.
Radiation oncologists and other physicians can request a clinical informatics consult by asking a question in PICOT format, and in 48 hours receive a concise publication-grade report built upon peer-reviewed observational study designs. These clinical informatics consults, called Prognostograms, are already being used to inform treatment decisions at Stanford Health Center, for refinement of clinical guidelines, in care protocol assessment, and to test research hypotheses. They are leading to more personalized care for diverse patient types and complex cases often underrepresented in clinical trials & published literature.
Another challenge is that the breadth and depth of data needed to answer similar consult questions in Oncology, such as the subsequent risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) for intermediate risk prostate cancer patients, may be hard to come by in standard EMR datasets. Atropos Health & ASCO CancerLinq are collaborating to solve this.
“With CancerLinQ, we can bring insights directly to the clinic for vulnerable patients with cancer who need personalized, targeted care to maximize the chance of a positive outcome. Our goal is to ensure that this network of physicians has the tools and evidence to identify new treatments and deliver exceptional care to their patients.”
– CMO Dr. Saurabh Gombar’s remarks when Atropos Health’s collaboration with ASCO CancerLinQ was announced
Advancing cancer care is a resounding priority – nationally at the White House, professionally for Radiation Oncologists like Dr Yuan and his peers at Ci4CC, and personally for many of us.
