Short Summary:

Stanford Health Care experienced marked increases in high-cost perineural liposomal bupivacaine use from 2015 to 2021. This poster examined the use of liposomal bupivacaine and found that Orthopedics accounted for 60% of it’s use. Using Sanford EHR data and leveraging the Green Button™ consult with statistical analysis by Atropos Health, the health system learned valuable insights on health outcomes when comparing high and low-cost drugs. In fact:

  • Stanford Health Care real-world evidence findings of non-superior clinical outcomes with high-cost liposomal bupivacaine were found to be consistent with recent meta-analysis
  • And, the health system could realize an annualized cost savings in Year 1 from retiring the drug estimated at $193,883
